Chapter 02 · Context

Why 2007

One of the most culturally significant years of the 21st century — and one of the least explored on screen. An entire generation has never experienced love without the performance layer of social media.

Technology

The iPhone launched June 29 — almost nobody had one. BBM pins were currency. Motorola Razrs were status. Facebook had just opened to everyone. MySpace still mattered.

Culture

Stomp the Yard was in theaters. Obama announced his presidential run. Black college students felt something historic coming. This is that world.

Music

T.I. — Big Things Poppin · Keyshia Cole — Love · Raheem DeVaughn — Woman · Jamie Foxx ft. Ludacris — Unpredictable · Beyoncé — Irreplaceable.

Love

You had to look someone in the eye and say what you felt. There was no story to post, no read receipt. What you said — and what you didn't — was everything.

“A text breakup in 2007 wasn't cliché. It was a statement. It said: you're not worth a phone call.”
